Giant Screen Films is comprised of a core team of professionals with a unique combination of experience, intelligence and leadership.

Don Kempf, President and Founder

Don started Giant Screen Films with a mission to bring enriching and impactful theatrical experiences to audiences worldwide. As a former history teacher, Don's decision to devote his career to educational documentary film production was a natural one. Over the past two decades, Giant Screen Films has produced and distributed an extensive catalog of some of the most successful films in the large-format market, including Michael Jordan to the Max, Pulse: a Stomp Odyssey, Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs, Dinosaurs Alive, Wild Ocean, Tornado Alley, Titans of the Ice Age, The Last Reef, Great White Shark, Journey to Space, Aircraft Carrier and Mysteries of China. Don also founded D3D Cinema, a sister company of GSF that outfits museums around the world with state-of-the-art digital 3D theater systems. Over the past decade, D3D has opened or retrofitted over fifty museum-based theaters. Don also won an Emmy-Award as Senior Producer of the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary Of Miracles and Men and was executive producer on the documentary So Goes the Nation. Don received a BA in history from Dartmouth College and an MBA in marketing and entrepreneurship from the University of Chicago.  

Andy WoodSenior Vice President | Producer

Since joining GSF in 2006, Andy's role has encompassed film production, international distribution, strategic planning, new ventures and business development – including the launch and executive management of GSF’s sister company, D3D Cinema. Prior to joining the company, Andy served as Director of Business Operations & Theaters at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia for seven years, where he oversaw IMAX and planetarium programming as well as revenue-generating museum operations. He is passionate about natural history and documentary film, with degrees in film production and field zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His board appointments have included the Giant Screen Cinema Association and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.

Mark Katz, Sr. Vice President, Film Distribution & Theater Development

Industry veteran Mark Katz joined Giant Screen Films in 2015 to help strategically expand the company’s global film distribution and business development as well as contribute to the continuing expansion of the museum theater network through GSF’s sister company D3D Cinema. For over 30 years, Mark has released and distributed more diverse and original films than anyone in the history of the giant screen and museum cinema industry. He was most recently President of Distribution for National Geographic Studios from 2006-2015. Prior to National Geographic, Katz headed up distribution for nWave Pictures from 1998-2005, was VP of Sales for Sony Pictures Classics from 1994-1998 and managed Film Distribution for Imax Corp. from 1988-1993. Katz is also a past Chairman of the Board for the Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA).

Derek Threinen, Vice President, Film Distribution & Business Development

Derek is a 20-year veteran of the giant-screen film industry. He began his career in theater operations, managing international institutional joint-ventures for SimEx. He then built and operated the Simons IMAX Theater as theater director for IMAX Corporation at Boston’s New England Aquarium before joining National Geographic’s Cinema Ventures group, where he oversaw film marketing and outreach activities. More recently, Derek served as a theater and film development consultant for several of the industry's most prestigious museums through Smithsonian Enterprises, including the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of American History and the Montreal Science Centre. Derek leads D3D’s giant screen business as well as North American distribution for Giant Screen Films.

Domingo Escutia Muñoz, Director of Sales & Distribution, Europe

Based in Valencia, Spain, Domingo leads GSF’s film distribution in Europe.  He is a longtime museum veteran, having worked in business administration for 13 years at Valencia’s distinguished City of Arts and Sciences museum and L’Hemisfèric, catering to over 3 million public and schools visitors. Managing a staff of 120 museum professionals, Domingo oversaw all programming, exhibitions, and operations in the museum and theaters, including an IMAX Dome, 3D digital venue, and planetarium.  He has an Executive MBA from ESIC Business & Marketing School and has long shared a passion for cinematography and motion pictures, working from a young age alongside his father in the family photography shop.

Deborah Raksany, Vice President, Development and Partnerships

After serving as a consultant for more than a year, Deborah became part of the GSF team in April of 2010. She works to develop relationships and initiatives that leverage the power of GSF’s productions, creating meaningful learning experiences, building brand value for sponsors and partners, and supporting the mission of museum exhibitors. She manages outreach campaigns and sponsor activation for films in distribution and pursues opportunities for projects in production. Her background includes work in environmental research as well as experience in communications, marketing and development for non profits.

Rob Grzymala, Vice President, Production and Finance

Rob oversees many of the company's day-to-day operational activities, including finance and accounting.   Rob also has become increasingly involved on the production side of the company's films.  Rob graduated from the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana with a degree in Finance.

Kathy Kempf, Director of Finance

Kathy oversees the company's various financial activities as well as HR-related matters.   She has a BA in Economics from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago.  

Liliya Dzhorayeva, Director of Distribution Operations

Liliya works closely with the distribution and operations team to support a portfolio of global theater clients by fulfilling their distribution and marketing needs. Prior to joining GSF, she was a Media Supervisor at Starcom MediaVest Group, where she analyzed marketing data, developed campaign strategies, and managed media plans that achieved brand’s marketing goals. Liliya graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Radio, Television and Film, and speaks Russian fluently.

Tom Rooney, Director of Sales and Marketing - Birdly VR 

In addition to being a member of GSF’s film distribution team, Tom manages Birdly VR – GSF and D3D’s first foray into the field of virtual reality. Since joining GSF in 2011, Tom has served in various distribution and marketing related roles at the company, most recently as the Director of Marketing and Distribution. Tom graduated from the University of Notre Dame with degrees in both History and German Language and Literature.     

Yasmine Garcia, Marketing and Distribution Fulfillment 

In addition to maintaining GSF's web presence and designing and drafting press releases, Yasmine coordinates the creation of marketing assets and distribution of films.  Prior to joining GSF, Yasmine spent several years working in the film marketing business, serving clients such as Walt Disney Pictures, Sony/Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios and many more, both in Chicago and Los Angeles. Yasmine graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in Marketing Communications.

Steve Kempf, Founder and Strategic Advisor

Steve founded Giant Screen Films with his brother Don to deliver inspirational and family-friendly films that entertain and educate, and serves the company in a strategic advisory capacity.  Steve is President of Lee Spring Company, a leading manufacturer based in Brooklyn, New York.  He has a BA from Harvard University and a JD/MBA from Harvard Law School.
